This first week after being told I have cervical cancer was rough. I had to call my moms (both my biological and step), my sister (who happens to be a nurse)and my Dad. I was lucky my step mom preped my Dad (as I couldnt tell him myself. We are very close and I didn’t want to have to cruch him with this news. Having my step mom there able to explain it to him and give him the positive points was a lot better than me crying on the phone.
Telling my boyfriend was strange. I was trying to be strong and then just blurted it out and started crying. Oh it was bad. He is a man of few words and basically let me blab on while he held me. Looking back it was probably the best reaction. So this man I love bought me a book. It is his way of helping. The book is wonderful and I knew I wanted to share it with everyone. It is called,
You Can Heal Your Life by Louise L. Hay.
Please go out and buy this book or check it out from the library. It is not about cancer but about how to heal yourself, from what ever it is that ails you. Everyone should read it but I found it to be especially positive at a time when there is so much negativity surrounding me. (On a side note the author also survived cancer : )
I also found a very helpful book at the library called,
Surviving The Cancer System by Mark R. Fessen, MD, FACP.
I was looking for something to prepare me for my first consultation with my oncologist. This book was brand new to the library, sitting among the “New” boooks. It was ment for me to find! It has really helped me understand everything from insurance companies, how cancer works, the different types of treatments, and care. I highly reccomend this book for new patients or anyone feeling overwhelmed by their options or situation. I fell like know what to expect (and what not to put up with!)
Has anyone else read any great books that helped them in their cancer treatment? I am open to natural care, traditional care, or a good fiction book for waiting room visits!
Thank you all for your continued support and love. Peace.

I will have to check out those books, thank you! Yes, it is very hard telling family we have cancer. My husband took care of telling everyone including our children that I have cancer because like you I would have cried my eyes out. I don’t really have any self help books that I read but I do try to read books I enjoy. If you want to read a positive uplifting book read Pink Slip Party. It is cute and funny and helps to take your mind off the cancer for awhile.
hugs,
Amy
Thanks Amy! I’ll look for that one : )
As far as self help I have read a bunch of books by Wayne W. Dyer. He is often on PBS specials too. The first and best book is called
You’ll See It When You Believe It by Wayne W. Dyer
He is fantastic. His writing is easy to read and in a style that feels like your friend telling talking to you (a very smart and enlightned friend!) This book is a good one to start with because it discusses how every thing in your life has lead you to this very moment, to each moment. Your life is exactly the way it is for a specific reason. When I read this book I was floored, I cried at parts of it, and I thought a lot. Its a good one. On a side note, Wayne and Louise Hay are friends and have collaborated on a movie about Louise Hays’ book that I mentioned in the ‘Books’ Blog. The movie is wonderful too!
Hiya,
I am so sorry you have to begin this horrible journey, but know thatwe are here for you every step of the way….
I have read many books about the foods that feed cancer…. Stay away from sugar while you are getting treatments… Sugar feeds cancer, but your Dr’s only push chemo and won’t agree….
Sonia
I hadn’t heard that one! I will cut out the sugar (its not good for you anyway, just tastes good : )
All of the books about food and cancer were checked out last week at my library. I am going to have to wait or buy some. Maybe just spend an afternnon reading for free at Barnes & Nobel?
